    Description

KM 5, one year type. Minted at the San Francisco Mint, for the Kingdom of Hawaii. Quarter dollar size silver coin, with the king on the obverse.
The first 8 in the date is 8/3.
Although the original mintage was 500,000 pieces, over 4,000 in Hawaiian 1883 coinage was melted by the U. S. government after Hawaii was annexed in 1898, including over half of the mintage of the 25 cent coins.  There were two additional melts which totaled over ,000 face value of Hawaiian coins, without a breakdown by denomination, and there was a major fire in Hawaii, in which a significant amount of Hawaiian coinage is believed to have been destroyed in the residential buildings. It is estimated that no more than 220,000 quarter dollar coins survived.
PCGS has established a Registry Set for coins minted in USA Mints for foreign governments.
