    Description

    The Hawaiian Century, 1883. One cent. The first coins were minted in Hawaii in 1847 — these were copper cents with a portrait of King Kamehameha III. The coins were not popular, as the portrait was of poor quality. In 1883, silver coins were minted in denominations of 10 cents (umi keneta), a quarter of a dollar (hapaha), half a dollar (hapalua) and one dollar (akahi dala). The vast majority of the coins were minted according to the same pattern as the corresponding American coins at the San Francisco Mint, and 26 coins of each denomination were minted at the Philadelphia Mint for representative purposes. Hawaiian coins continued to be in circulation for some time after the annexation of Hawaii by the United States in 1898. In 1903, Hawaiian coins were withdrawn from circulation by an Act of Congress, and most of them were melted down
