Born in 1927, in Ikirisaq, Northwest Territories, Kenojuak Ashevak spent most of her life living on the land in a manner not unlike her ancestors, traveling from camp to camp on South Baffin and Arctic Quebec, as hunting dictated. In 1949, Kenojuak married Johnniebo and lived with him in various camps. In the late 1950s, they both began to experiment with carving and drawing encouraged by James Houston. They settled in Cape Dorset in 1966 and continued to work together until Johnniebo’s death. Perhaps the most internationally recognized of all Inuit artists, Kenojuak received the Order of Canada in 1967 and was also elected to the Royal Canadian Academy in 1974. Three of her images have been released as Canadian postage stamps. Her work, a signature style being simple, direct and vivacious, has attracted art collectors and delighted audiences around the world.
Although Cape Dorset women artists focus intensely on the world they live in, they also create unusual and unique pieces that offer an entrée into the world of the imagination. Their enormous talent, coupled with boundless enthusiasm and determination, has led to the enrichment of a unique dimension of contemporary Canadian art. Moreover, their creative vision and vibrant imagination has helped them translate their emotions and concerns, as women and as members of the Inuit community, in the face of their deteriorating environment and disappearing customs and culture.
